Get Proper Treatment for Ankle Injuries

If you're experiencing ankle pain, you may be suffering from an ankle injury. Sprains, fractures, Achilles tendonitis, and Achilles tendon ruptures are just some examples of potential ankle injuries. Don't wait for care for an ankle injury, as it may worsen over time. We can help!

Many people wear different types of shoes when the summer months approach. These can be flip flops or sandals, and despite the warm air feeling good on the feet, unwanted foot conditions may develop. These can include cracked heels, athlete’s foot, and toenail fungus. Good foot protection during the summer months can begin with limiting the time these types of shoes are worn and wearing shoes that can protect the feet. The majority of shoes require socks to be worn, and it is beneficial to ensure they do not have seams or stitching which can rub against the feet and possibly cause blisters. Many people bypass their feet while applying sunscreen, and blisters may develop if they become sunburned. After a day at the beach, it is beneficial to wash and dry the feet, followed by applying a good moisturizer. This can help the feet to feel smooth while preventing cracked heels from developing. If you would like more information about foot protection during the warmer months, it is suggested that you consult with a chiropodist who can provide you with valuable information.

Understanding Ankle Arthritis

Arthritis affects ankles less frequently than other joints, but when it does, mobility can become painful. If the tibiotalar joint, which is the joint between the shin bone and the ankle bone is worn down, it can cause ankle arthritis. Things that can lead to erosion in this joint can include previous ankle injuries, or an infection in the ankle joint that can damage cartilage cells. Additionally, patients who are overweight may develop ankle arthritis. Some people may also have a genetic predisposition for faster wear and tear of the ankle joint. Beyond pain, other symptoms of ankle arthritis can include ankle stiffness, swelling, bone spurs, and the ankle may feel unstable. A less common symptom of ankle arthritis is an irritation of the nerves surrounding the ankle joint which may cause a tingling sensation and numbness in the feet and toes. If you have persistent or worsening pain in your ankle, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a chiropodist who can diagnose the problem as ankle arthritis or another foot condition, and provide you with appropriate treatment.

Osteoarthritis in the feet or ankles can be a painful and disabling condition that may interfere with your daily activities. If you have arthritis, please consult with Emily Yu, B.Sc from Uptown Foot Care Clinic. Our specialist will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

What Is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a condition in which the protective layer of cartilage in the joints breaks down over time. This loss of cartilage causes the bones to rub together during movement, leading to pain and inflammation. Osteoarthritis is associated with aging, and often affects the small joints of the feet and ankles.

Symptoms

Symptoms of osteoarthritis include:

  • Joint pain

  • Joint stiffness

  • Swelling in or around the joint

  • Restricted range of motion

  • Difficulty walking

Diagnosis

Osteoarthritis can be diagnosed through physical examination. You may also need to have an X-ray taken to assess the extent of the damage caused by arthritis.

Treatment

Treatment for osteoarthritis focuses on reducing symptoms and improving the function of the affected joints. Conservative treatments include oral pain medications, orthotic devices, bracing or immobilizing the affected foot or ankle, steroid injections into the affected joint to reduce inflammation, and physical therapy. In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary.

Chiropodists are medical professionals who treat ankle and foot conditions. These can include ingrown toenails and fungal foot infections, such as athlete’s foot. There is extensive mandatory training to become a chiropodist, and this begins with obtaining a bachelor's degree in a subject that relates to science. This is followed by earning a master’s degree, which may take between 12 months and two years to complete. Some people choose to pursue an apprenticeship degree. This will allow the student to train and work simultaneously, which can appeal to those who are interested in earning a wage and partaking in a learning experience. It is beneficial to possess skills that can include problem-solving, time management, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. A daily routine may consist of scheduling appointments and providing advice to patients about specific foot conditions. Additionally, diagnostic tests are often performed such as X-rays, and it may be necessary to manage a medical staff. If you are interested in becoming a chiropodist, it is suggested that you speak to this type of professional who can help you to determine if this is the right choice for you.

If you have any foot or ankle concerns, contact Emily Yu, B.Sc of Uptown Foot Care Clinic. Our specialist can provide the care you need to keep you on your feet.

A chiropodist is a healthcare professional that specializes in the feet, ankles, and lower limbs. With the amount of work the feet do in a lifetime, the whole body works better if the feet are properly supported. Chiropodists must have a bachelor’s degree in science and complete a three to four-year chiropody program. They can then work independently or as part of a team. Chiropodists are like podiatrists, the only difference being the country they obtained where they obtained their degrees. The field can be called podiatry in the United States and chiropody elsewhere. A chiropodist is a popular term for this profession in the UK and Canada. Chiropodists treat a variety of foot problems from corns and calluses to fungal infections. Some also offer orthotics. They might provide a variety of foot therapies, injections, and surgical procedures. Normally one sees a chiropodist when they are experiencing pain but visiting one regularly, as one would a dentist, can help ensure the feet are in top form and help prevent future problems. If you suffer from foot or ankle pain or have questions about your lower extremities, book an appointment with a chiropodist today.

What Does a Chiropodist Do?

A chiropodist helps people with problems with their feet and ankles with the goal of making their lives more comfortable. A chiropodist takes care of blisters, corns, bunions, cracked heels, nail problems, and sprained ankles, just to mention a few things that can go wrong with our feet. A chiropodist will take your medical history and examine your feet for blood circulation and any other problems going on. They will watch you walk and how you move when you walk. They will discuss any findings they come up with and discuss a treatment plan with you.

What Does It Take to Become a Chiropodist?

Chiropodists must have seven to eight years of post-secondary school before beginning to practice. They must obtain a bachelor’s degree in science and complete a three-to-four-year chiropody program. Chiropodists work independently or as part of a team.

Many areas of the body can become swollen in pregnant women, and the feet are no exception. It can happen for various reasons, consisting of weight gain from the growing fetus, and the extra blood and fluids the body produces during this time. Many pregnant women develop flat feet and can begin to walk with their feet rolling inward. This is referred to as over-pronation and may over-stretch the plantar fascia. This, in turn, may cause plantar fasciitis, which can happen when the plantar fascia becomes irritated or torn. It is beneficial to engage in a gentle exercise routine, which can positively affect the overall body.
