A Lisfranc injury is a dislocation or fracture in the midfoot area. Though rare, it is something that can cause long-term damage if not treated. This type of injury typically occurs after stepping into a small hole, causing a twisting force with body weight on top. It can also result from car accidents. Symptoms include pain in this area, difficulty with weight bearing, and swelling on the top of the foot. An imaging test can detect this injury, which can consist of having an X-ray, bone scan, or MRI taken. Once confirmed, a cast with a toe plate extending beneath the toes can be used to immobilize the affected joint. If you have pain in your midfoot area, it is strongly suggested that you make an appointment with a chiropodist immediately for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
